Islanders out in their thousands to greet the Queen

Royal fever swept across Bermuda as the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were given a rapturous welcome.

Months of behind-the-scenes planning paid off as the royal visitors arrived on island yesterday for a three-day whirlwind visit.

The royal visit not only marks the 400th anniversary of Bermuda but 56 years to the day the Queen became the first reigning monarch to visit the island.

Thousands of locals and tourists showed their affection and admiration for the royal visitors by giving them a hero's welcome.

There were enthusiastic cheers, loud clapping, countless school children with homemade flags and even six-month-old babies in silver crowns.

The royal visitors arrived at L.F. Wade International Airport around 3pm before heading straight to King's Square, St. George's to be greeted by about 2,000 people.

Today and tomorrow the royal party will attend a Thanksgiving Service at the Cathedral, visit Dockyard and plant a tree at Government House. They leave Bermuda on Thursday morning.

How is the Queen a conqueror? Bermuda was colonized in 1609,over 300 years before the Monarch was born!! All that you speak of is within our control to change. We come under Britain but we are still for the most part a self-governing territory. The queen is not the one to stamp out racism, that's a social ill that only we in Bermuda can cure, through education, understanding, respect, and tolerance. Let me guess, you're one of those people that blames the Governor for everything, right?

"Does she even know what goes on here" Iam sure that if she was aware of "what goes on here" Bermuda would already be having a Commission of Inquiry just like Turks and Caicos. Continue your pointless rant...

To: what a sham and a shame! My, my, my....You certainly have an 'ENORMOUS' chip on YOUR shoulder!! Bermuda was, is and will remain very British and very LOYAL to the UK and the Monarchy...Whether you like it or not!! If you want independence - which 70% of Bermudians do NOT....Then I strongly suggest you go back to one of the African countries on that Continent - and see how you like it!! I'm sure you will NOT be missed in Bermuda!! PS: Take Ewart Brown & a few others with you & try Nigeria, Somalia or Liberia - good luck!! LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!

Here we go again, pull the race card! If you're going to criticize at least have the courtesy to do it with a well written, articulated and grammatically correct statement!

Exactly, right on point brotha! BUT shouldn't Last Kings of Scotland apply too? We get beat up by the establisment, then we turn to our smooth-talking, well-dressed brothas who offer to help. We elect them and then the mess gets messier. Kinda feel abused and misused as I was caught at a most vulnerable time.

The Queen is not a conquerer, Bermuda was never Conquerer! It was found by English Sailors and settlers who decided to stay. There was no one there before that to conquerer. do you no nothing about your history. Bermuda is British and if dont like it then you are free to leave

Why are we celebrating a conquerer? The children will grow fond of a queen and not see through the smoke screen. she wants us to be making a fuss over her because it is the biggest ego trip. what did she do to stamp out racism in bermuda? what did she do to protect black bermudians from psychological slavery and the damage to our community by rapacious white businessmen. Has she done anything to ensure that black children get education just like white children? Does she even know what goes on here"? So why are we happy to see a monarch that does not ensure justice for us? this is a sham and a shame! celebrating being a colony is one step from being proud to be on a plantation!
