The first female Chief Immigration Officer in the history of Bermuda Government was appointed yesterday.
Mrs. Majiedah (Rozy) Azhar succeeds Dr. Martin Brewer.
She has been praised for her wealth of experience and comprehensive understanding of the issues the department faces.
She said: "It is indeed an honour to be appointed as Chief Immigration Officer, especially as I am the first female CIO.
"While we have a number of issues to address this year and into the future in the Department of Immigration, I am confident that we will address them effectively thanks in part to a formidable team, which includes one of the hardest working Ministers in Government, one of the most diligent and forward thinking Permanent Secretaries and an Immigration staff of hard working, skilled individuals."
Efficiency
Mrs. Azhar will work under the policy direction of David Burch, Minister for Labour, Home Affairs and Housing and under the general direction of Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Derrick Binns.
Minister Burch said: "There is much work to be done in the Department of Immigration.
"I look forward to working with Mrs. Azhar and having her invaluable assistance in ensuring all elements in the department continue operating at the highest level of efficiency."
Mrs. Azhar began working with the government in 1997 as an Assistant Chief Immigration Officer.
She has been serving as Acting Chief Immigration Officer for the past three months.
She holds a degree in Business Management and an Institute of Management Services Diploma and is currently completing her MBA with the University of Edinburgh's Heriot Watt Graduate Business School.
Mrs. Azhar came to the Department of Immigration from the Bank of Bermuda, where she was a Senior Business Analyst from 1988 to 1997.
Before that, she was a Financial Controller for Gibbons Company Ltd. from 1981 to 1988.
