SUNDAY, June 1: The body of 14-year-old CedarBridge Academy student Rhiana Moore was found at Blue Hole Hill Park, Hamilton Parish shortly after 11am yesterday, and foul play has not been ruled out.

One man has been taken into custody, but police would only reveal the briefest of details about the circumstances surrounding the death at a press conference yesterday afternoon, for fear of compromising the investigation.

But Police Commissioner George Jackson confirmed that the death is being treated as suspicious and that foul play has not been ruled out.

Chief Inspector Antoine Daniels of the Serious Crime Unit led off the press conference by saying: "Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 14-year-old Rhiana Moore of Devonshire Parish.

"Her lifeless body was discovered in the area of Blue Hole Park yesterday shortly after 11am.

"Officers were dispatched to the scene and located the body, and a short time later her death was certified by a physician. I would like to now take this opportunity to extend my sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased, Rhiana Moore. An investigation has commenced and we are making steady progress," he said.

"Presently we have one man in custody and we are following other lines of inquiry."

He also said police would like to speak to anyone who had either seen or spoken to the dead girl at anytime on Friday, but particularly after 9 pm to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315 or to contact the confidential Crimestoppers hot line, at 1 800 623-8477.

A forensic pathologist is expected in Bermuda from Toronto this week to carry out an autopsy.

Mr. Jackson sought to reassure the dead girl's family and the public that police had all resources in place to deal with the matter.

"This incident hits at the core of society and we will pursue it vigorously," he said.

"This matter will be pursued vigorously and it is our hope to bring it to a successful conclusion."

He also said 16 officers were working on the investigation and asked anyone who had information about the death to call police.

Meanwhile, next door to Police Headquarters, at CedarBridge Academy, the car park was filled as schoolmates and others who knew Miss Moore attended a gathering at the school organized by principal Kalmar Richards to pay tribute.

Grief counsellors were on hand all afternoon.

My Condolences go out to the Moore Family. But at the same time I am angry. Let’s pray that the authorities are able to fully convict someone this time, and what happen twelve years ago, isn't repeated. If you are out there an do know something, please come forward.

I extend my sympathy to the family of Rhiana; may you find strength in your time of sorrow. I was shocked to learn of the murder on Saturday afternoon and I've had a sick feeling in my stomach since learning that it was the daughter of Julieann Wainwright and Rhohan Moore. She was a beautiful little girl who grew into a fine young lady and it's a shame that there are sick individuals out there who prey upon these innocent teenagers. May Rhiana rest in peace.

They need to bring back the death penalty. There is just too much of this killing going on and the consequences are basically a place to eat and sleep for 25 years to life. The sad thing is the taxpayer along whch include thevictims families pay for it. SO SAD !!!!

First of all I would like to send my condolences to all the friends and family of Rhiana. This tragedy has been a shock to the whole island and has opened our eyes even wider to the evil that has been exposing itself greater and greater over the years. We must let Rhiana's short life stand for something, we can not allow evil to prevail. Bermuda we are in a spiritual battle and we can not win this one with just natural forces. It is going to be up to each of us individually and corporately to seek the will of God for our island. To stop talking about the problems but to start downloading the solutions. Lets all let good prevail and lets all pray for our leaders that it might go well with all of us.
