Bermuda’s legal community has established an award in honour of Dame Lois Browne-Evans that will give a top law student “a once in a lifetime opportunity” to do a year’s training at a prestigious U.K. firm. The Bermuda Bar Association has announced the establishment of the Dame Lois Browne-Evans 2008 Pupillage Award, which comes with a $10,000 bursary and the opportunity to do a year’s pupillage at Carmelite Chambers. News of the award was announced in an ad that describes Carmelite Chambers as “one of the largest and most established sets” in the U.K. Its barristers “are regularly instructed in high-profile criminal cases both in the United Kingdom and internationally.” Competition for pupillage places, the ad also says, is “incredibly fierce and a pupillage at Carmelite Chambers is a once in a lifetime training opportunity for the successful applicant.” Applicants must have completed or be in the process of completing the bar vocational course. They must have the “current intention” to practice in the field of criminal law. The award has been established in honour of Dame Lois, the former Opposition Leader and Attorney General, who was Bermuda’s first female lawyer. Dame Lois, who had a long career in law and politics, died three days before she would have celebrated her 80th birthday last June 1. She will be the first person honoured on National Heroes Day, which will be observed for the first time in October. Chief Justice Richard Ground will preside over the award committee.
