7/29/2009 11:14:00 AM Come join in the Emancipation Day fun
By Daniella Jade Lowe
An Emancipation Day event will be held at the Botanical Gardens from 12 noon to 8pm on Saturday. This event will give any talented cooks the opportunity to demonstrate and provide food samplings to all those who attend this event.
The day will begin with Fanfare by the Bermuda Regiment Band Trumpeters in the Main Ring followed by a Processional and opening speeches by the Governor, the Acting Premier, the Minister of Culture and Social Rehabilitation and a blessing by Mr. Austin Thomas.
All food demonstrations will start at 1pm and they will be held in the J.K Building. Mr. Ayo Johnson from the African Association will be conducting a session at 3pm on how to make Kele Wele, which is a Ghanaian dish.
He said, "I wanted to participate to help commemorate Bermuda's 400th year celebration. I decided to make this dish because many Bermudians have African ancestry." The fifth and last demonstration will begin at 5pm.
After each demonstration, there will be entertainment including an Emancipation Day Film Festival as well as various displays. There will also be Children's Fun Traditional Games and Story Telling. The Children's Story Telling will run from 2pm to 5pm in the Sensory Garden. The Finale event will be at 7:30pm, which will feature the Warwick Gombeys.
Public parking will be located on the Botanical Gardens' South Shore Field. Reserved parking will be located at the Berry Hill entrance. Senior's and special needs can request reserved parking by calling 278-8889.
