Four hundred is the magic number for students at Mount Saint Agnes Academy (MSA) who are celebrating Bermuda's 400th anniversary with tremendous gusto.

In the past few months students have picked up 400 pieces of trash, raised $400 for the Sunshine League and SPCA, and made 400 baked goods for Westmeath nursing home residents.

Everyone in the school took part from grades K through to 12.

Each class chose an activity using the number 400 to help educate others about Bermuda's history, while at the same time helping those in need.

Director of development at MSA, Lisa Anne Bardgett, said:

"As the island celebrates it's 400th anniversary we thought it would be good for the students to get into the celebration also.

"Mount Saint Agnes Academy is proud to be a part of Bermuda's past and will continue to celebrate this milestone in Bermuda's history.

"You can tell by the presentation of the art pieces that the students were well into it. Students have definitely taken up the idea."

Other class activities included compiling a list of 400 facts about Bermuda, identifying 400 marine creatures found in Bermuda and then making a coral reef display, and putting 400 written prayers together on a linked chain.

"The prayer link was done by grades 10 to 12," Ms Bardgett said. "Each student wrote their prayer on brightly-coloured pieces of construction paper during religion class and then all of them were fitted together in a giant chain."

Beautiful Bermuda

One prayer link said: "Dear God, I pray for this Island. I pray that the people that live on it keep it clean and beautiful. I hope it is never demolished, and that it is blessed with peace between the people that live and visit the Island."

Another read: "Dear Lord, Thank you for giving Bermuda everything it has and protecting it from hazardous hurricanes. Please watch over and bless our Island community through all the bad and struggling times. Watch over everyone, especially people on the roads. Help us all to love one another and respect each other."

Despite the fact that the school year is drawing to a close, teachers plan to continue the popular '400 projects' for fall 2009.

In September, the After School Program will be planting 400 seedlings around the school and MSA's annual Bazaar on October 16 and 17 will be themed around the 400th anniversary.

Well done, MSA. You are always showing others how you can make a difference in Bermuda's small community. Keep up the good work!
