Truckers are celebrating after winning their fight to get the Flatts Village road ban lifted.
Government is expected to announce “any day now” that the heavy vehicle restrictions will be scrapped outside of rush hour.
It comes after the Bermuda Truckers Association raised concerns about the “harsh” ban on trucks using that stretch of North Shore Road.
They said they were forced to use narrow Store Hill Road where “the walls and the roads had been damaged due to excessive loads.”
Richard Foggo, president of the Bermuda General Truckers Association, said: “I can assure you the truckers are really pleased the changes are being put in place.
Harsh
“We thought the outright ban was a bit harsh as it was such an inconvenience to so many.
“Being able to pass through Flatts Village in non-rush hour times is an asset to everyone.
“We still won’t be rushing through the most heavily congested times so it will work out well for all.”
All trucks wider than 6ft 4in were banned from travelling through Flatts Village at the start of the year. Government announced it was “due to the narrow road width and the frequency of accidents.”
The ban applied to all heavy trucks with plate numbers starting TT, HC and HB and was put in place from the junction of Middle Road at Palmetto gardens to Store Hill Road.
The amendments to the ban came about after a July 5 meeting between Mr. Foggo and Minister of Works and Engineering Derrick Burgess.
Mr. Foggo asked for the ban on heavy equipment and commercial vehicles to just apply to the hours of 7:30am to 9:30am and 4:30pm and 6:30pm.
Mr. Foggo said Minister Burgess had been “very positive and welcoming” during the meeting.
The Ministry of Works and Engineering did not respond when asked for comment.
