A 16-year-old boy who was shot during a party at Bermuda College took himself to hospital before police arrived.
The teenager was treated at King Edward Memorial Hospital for a single gunshot wound to his upper body but released just a matter of hours later the same day.
Police were called to the college at 1:40am on Saturday morning after residents reported hearing gunshots.
Further investigations revealed that a fight broke out at the party between a group of young men.
During the brawl the 16-year-old man was shot in the upper body. He also sustained head injuries as a result of the fight.
A car on the premises was also damaged during the outbreak of violence.
Detectives believe that the two incidents may be linked.
College spokesperson Evelyn James Barnett stressed that the incident did not take place at an event that was being hosted by the Student Government Council (SGC) in the Student Hall at the time.
Student safety
She said: "We take the issue of student safety very seriously and in this instance, as at all SGC-sponsored events, there was a strong security presence inside the Hall, as well as externally, using Bermuda College security officers and those from an external agency.
"Nevertheless, the event was ended early by chaperones and persons left the College without incident."
Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said: "The investigation into this incident is still ongoing.
"We would like to hear from anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area of the college that night or who saw someone discharge a firearm."
