Haiti telethon raises $83k
Helen Jardine

Bermuda raised more than $83,000 for Haiti's earthquake victims on Monday night through the To Haiti With Love telethon.

The show, hosted by Vivienne Craig and Glenn Jones, featured performances from acts such as the Bermuda Institute Steel band and the African Dance Company. A Sharon Wilson painting was auctioned for $2,700.

The telethon, on VSB, was organised by the Barbados Association, Jamaican Association, Bermuvinjan & West Indian Association and sponsored by KeyTech.

Marlene Flynn-Carty, president of the Jamaican Association in Bermuda, called the night "nothing short of spectacular".

She added: "Last night's experience baptised us - a group of people from different cultures, skin colour, professional background - in love.

"If we had only raised $10,000, I am sure I speak on behalf of everyone that had anything to do with the telethon, it would have been worth it.

"What we experienced not even a million dollars could have given.

"The people of Bermuda with their big hearts are to be commended as they gave so generously to a worthy cause."

The funds will be evenly distributed to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Association, the Salvation Army, Feed My Lambs Ministry and Haiti Village Help.

The Caribbean Associations in Bermuda will organise at least two more events in aid of Haiti.
