Ministry of Tourism press release

TUESDAY, MAR. 9: In a new initiative from the Department of Tourism, ten of the top taxi drivers in London will be feeling the love and spreading the warmth of the Bermudian sunshine in pink taxis.

To ensure that passengers get to enjoy the full Bermuda experience, the ten drivers will come to experience the island's pink sand beaches and crystal blue waters firsthand. The drivers will return to London ready to be Bermuda's newest ambassadors.

Director of Tourism William Griffith said: "This is the first time we've undertaken anything like this in the UK. The British market is of significant importance to us and this year, we intend to renew our efforts and bring a little slice of our beautiful island to the UK."

Painted pink and adorned with the phrase 'Feel the love' and Bermuda's famous shorts, the taxis will bring a piece of island life to the city. The taxis will be further supported from April to June and September to November with an additional 100 taxis with the feel the love branding on the side panels.

This is one of the best ideas for many years. Unfortunately, it is false marketing. Bermuda shorts, worn as part of the overall dress, are as rare as a cahow. When was the last time a "bobby" was in the Birdcage directing traffic? These were the images of a Bermuda that doesn't exist anymore, thanks to the Afro-Americanism that has taken place. Now the image is of men in dark shades and suits usually worn by rappers.

Bermuda needs to be bigger and there needs to be an image of what Bermuda looks like instead of just shorts. What kind of marketing is that when you are selling a location on its beauty. I have seen so many billboards in the US airports where I can't even read the word Bermuda. First rule of marketing a product is getting the message across clearly!!

Now THIS is money well-spent. Tis is long-term advertising. Hopefully they service places where our target market is.. :-)
