Police injured in weekend traffic stops

MONDAY, FEB. 8: Two drivers struck officers with their vehicles this weekend while attempting to flee from police during two separate incidents.

Around 2:30am on Saturday, a driver struck an officer with his taxi as he left the scene of an accident.

The officers were questioning the 27-year-old Hamilton parish man at the time about a collision on Water Street, St. George's.

After leaving the scene, the driver lost control of the taxi on Stone Crusher Corner with police in pursuit. He sustained a shoulder injury and cuts when the taxi overturned.

The driver was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

The injured officer was also taken to KEMH for soreness to her hip and leg and bruises. She was later released.

In a separate incident around 9:45pm on Saturday, police stopped a motorcyclist who failed to stop when turning east from Khyber Pass onto Middle Road, Warwick.

While the 21-year-old Warwick man was being questioned about the offence, he fled on his motorcycle, hitting two police officers and knocking one of them down.

Police pursued and caught the suspect, who resisted arrest. Officers used a deterrent spray to subdue the rider and took him into custody.

Police said: "The extent of the two officers' injuries is unknown. Inquiries into this incident are underway and a court appearance is anticipated in the near future."
