FRIDAY, MAY 4: Residents have a unique opportunity to see Masters champion Bubba Watson up close.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf announced the launch of the volunteer recruitment campaign for this year’s Championship.

Bermuda golf fans have the chance to get inside the ropes, a privilege rarely offered.

The 2012 Masters Champion Bubba Watson is the first of the qualifiers for the October tournament, ultimately to be joined by three more Majors champions who have to earn their way into the elite foursome.

Long before the field is set though, hundreds of volunteers are assembled to plan the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, seen on television in more than 100 countries.

Andy Burrows, general chairman of the 2012 PGA Grand Slam of Golf, said: “As we see year after year, volunteers are critical to the success of the Grand Slam and this time around we’re mobilizing them earlier in anticipation of a very big year for the event.”

There is a wide variety of roles, and volunteers don’t have to be golf fans to be eligible; however, a general knowledge of the game is helpful.

One of the most sought-after positions is Marshal as it provides great viewing and exclusive access.

These positions are spread out around the course coordinating the flow of movement for the players, caddies, officials and media.

More than 100 marshals are needed to help with the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

The event will also require about 60 additional people to assist with ropes and stakes, scoring, signage, admission and distribution.

People interested in more information can find it at www.pga.com/grandslam  by clicking on the volunteer tab.

This is also where volunteers can sign up for the roles they prefer.  It only takes a few minutes.

Volunteers will be expected to pay $50 for their volunteer package consisting of two golf shirts, a pair of shorts or skort and headwear to be worn as uniforms.

Volunteers will also be issued an official golf programme, food vouchers, parking privileges and a volunteer credential to attend all three days of the tournament.

The credential can also be used when a volunteer is not on duty.  The volunteer package has a value of more than $250.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is Monday, October 22 to Wednesday, October 24, 2012.

Volunteers are asked to sign up immediately.
