Perozzi: I want to move up to No. 1
Bermuda’s world boxing champ Teresa Perozzi is looking to switch up a gear after cruising to her first title defence.
Perozzi out-boxed Martha 'Sexy Mex' Deitchman to claim a comfortable points victory on Saturday night, leaving her gutsy opponent in tears.
From the moment the fighters stepped into the ring — Perozzi looking lean and confident, Deitchman looking less so in sweat pants and a vest — the gap in class was evident.
And the champ was rarely troubled in a comfortable eight rounds, which saw her pepper her opponent with a series of crushing left jabs.
Deitchman, out of her depth, was left to fend off the controlled onslaught and bravely hung on to take it to a points decision, which inevitably went in favour of Perozzi.
Now the NABC world middleweight champion is looking for a new challenge and a tougher opponent.
Of the Deitchman fight, she said: “This was a good test for me but I want to keep challenging myself. I hope this doesn’t scare people off. Each time I want to get better.
“I think I can handle myself in the ring with anybody. I want to move my way up to number one. I’m not ready for it yet, but that’s where I want to get to.”
For now she is still reveling in a victory that for the first time seems to have been controversy free.
“It’s been much smoother this time,” she said in reference to the trials that surrounded her first world title win, when the original sanctioning agency tried to take back the belt.
“The only thing I would dispute in this fight is that she said she cut me. I’ve never been cut — Troy Darrell’s old manager says it is because of the salt-sea air.”
She said she felt she was getting better with every fight and with sponsorship starting to fall into place she felt she would be able to train even harder in future.
“Each fight I’d like to get a little more of a challenge,” said Perozzi, who believes Deitchman was actually a better fighter than Scroller Carrington who had won six of her seven pro bouts before Perozzi knocked her out to win the title last year.
“Carrington looked in better shape but she never tested me once.
“I had to move round the ring more and use my training in this fight. Against Carrington it was all in the corner.”
She added that she was pleased to have proven that she could go the distance if required.
“With everything that went on to interrupt my training it was good to prove that I could do it. I was in control the whole fight but it was a good test for me to go eight rounds.”
The other significant results saw Joshua Smith defeat Leo ‘The Lionheart’ Richardson and Jerome Caines win a split decision over Lyndon Woods.
Last year Richardson defeated Smith so it was a bit of revenge for the ‘Hammering Hairdresser’.
