FRIDAY, APR. 20: The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee has announced that sailor-journalist Dobbs Davis will provide online commentary during the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race, and that Yellowbrick Tracking Ltd. will provide tracking services.

A widely experienced, successful racing sailor, Dobbs Davis has competed in five Newport Bermuda Races and other major races as navigator, tactician, and sail-trimmer.

Davis is US Editor for Seahorse magazine, a regular contributor to Sailing World, Sail, and other publications.

“The Newport Bermuda Race is deservedly an ocean racing classic,” Davis said. “It brings in all the relevant tests of offshore sailing skills: boat and team preparation, weather and current analysis, sail selection and strategy, coordinated teamwork, and safety. Winners are those that excel in all these factors.”

Yellowbrick Tracking Ltd. will provide services and equipment to the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race that track boats’ positions on the race website, www.BermudaRace.com and Yellowbrick’s iPhone/Android mobile app.

Public display of positions will be delayed six hours during the first 48 hours of the race after the June 15th start so crews do not gain a tactical advantage by knowing other boats’ exact positions. Subsequent displays will be in real time.

Yellowbrick also provides tracking for the Rolex Fastnet Race, Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race, Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, Bayview to Mackinac Yacht Race, RORC Caribbean 600, Velux 5 Oceans, World Gliding Championships, and other events.

The 2012 Newport Bermuda Race starts on June 15 in Rhode Island and finishes several days later off St David’s Head, Bermuda.
