Bicycle Works' Neil De Ste Croix claimed a podium finish despite failing to make the start line in time for the sixth race of the Flying Colors Fat Tire Massive Race Series at Fort Scaur.

De Ste Croix missed the beginning of the Male A race by a minute and a half yet scrambled through the field to still manage a respectable third place behind Mark Hatherly and winner Dominic Mayho.

A total of 101 racers braved the gusty and — for Novice and Jr 13-15 class at least — raining conditions. It meant the Fort Scaur and Heydon trails were treacherous and caused a number of spills and at least two sprained hands — but all racers walked away muddy and happy.

The big upset of the day saw Social Cycles rider Ussef Eve finally overcome Billy Phillips for the win in the Male Novice, while the toughest battle saw Crimestoppers Manning Smith and Crimestoppers Eusebio King-Mills fight it out for 16 minutes in the junior 12-and-under class for second and third spot.

Manning stalked Eusebio until the last lap and then made his move past him. Unfortunately, though, he got tangled with a lapped rider only 200 yards from the finish. Both competitors were exhausted after the epic battle.
