FRIDAY, JUNE 22: The Bermuda School Sports Federation honoured 54 of Bermuda’s finest student-athletes at the 27th annual Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards.
Warwick Academy swept all three boys categories with Joshua Malpas taking the award for the Senior School Boys.
CedarBridge Academy’s Akeila Richardson took the Senior Girls’ title
CARIFTA games participant Richardson was the deputy head girl and has also represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Youth Games as well as the CAC youth championships. She also led CedarBridge as Netball captain.
She won the 2012 Outstanding Teen Award and was also recognized for sports and academic achievement.
She is president of CedarBridge’s debate team and the 2012 French Alliance of Bermuda French Education Scholarship Recipient.
Saltus’ Rachel Waldron was the recipient of honourable mention. Waldron was a mainstay on many Saltus’ teams including football, netball, basketball, track and field, badminton and swimming. She also excels academically performing well in her advance placement exams.
Malpas represented Warwick in basketball, volleyball, track and field, football, swimming, softball, badminton, cross country and tennis.
He is head prefect and deputy head boy. He is currently a member of the senior volleyball team and captain of the junior team.
Malpas is a lifeguard and swim instructor. He has also attained 9 GCSE’s in 2012.
Phillip Burgess of CedarBridge received honourable mention. The under 19 basketball star captained the wildcats to an undefeated basketball season. He was also volleyball and softball captain.
These awards, honouring the late Denton Hurdle, are used to highlight, recognize and reward the finest primary, middle and senior school student-athletes.
Zekiah Lewis from West Pembroke was the Denton Hurdle Memorial Award winner for the Primary School Girls’ Division.
Lewis represented her school in football, netball, track and field, swimming and softball. She is an East Coast Invitational track meet medalist and a current member of the national gymnastics team.
Honourable mention was given to Ashley Irby from Saltus Grammar School and Brijette Basden from Francis Patton.
IWarwick Academy’s Sajan Harvey won the Primary School Boys division. Harvey excelled on the track this year winning the KPMG Front Street Mile and the 2012 Over 10 Boys BSSF track and Field Champion.
He was an All-star footballer and also competed in rugby, tennis, softball, swimming and cricket.
Honourable mention was awarded to Zaarion Darrell from Dalton E. Tucker Primary and Tariq Simons from Purvis Primary.
The Middle School Girls division was won by Eva Frazzoni from Saltus Grammar School. Frazzoni is currently training with two national programmes. She represents Bermuda at the youth level in tennis and is also training with the National Academy in football.
She will be training with FC Virginia this summer in the Super Y League Programme. She is an honour student who is also an excellent musician.
Zakiyyah Showers from Sandys Secondary Middle School received honourable mention.
Warwick Academy’s Shannon Botelho won the Middle School Boys division. He has represented Bermuda at the CARIFTA swimming championships. He was also part of the Bermuda under 14 rugby team which toured Canada earlier this year.
Botelho is always keen to represent his school and competes in swimming, rugby, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track and field, badminton, tennis, softball and football.
Tyler Smith from Somersfield Academy was awarded honourable mention.
