FRIDAY, JUNE 8: Shaquille Dill set a new Bermuda junior record in the 400 metres Tuesday night at the National Sports Centre at the Pacers Track Club meet.
Dill’s time of 47.64 was also good enough to qualify him to run the 400 metres at the IAAF World Junior Championships later this year.
Dill needed to run faster than 47.95 to qualify for junior worlds in the 400 metres.
Dill’s 47.64 seconds record performance displaced the previous record of 47.9 seconds set - 36 years ago — by Renalda Swan in 1976.
Dill’s coach Gerry Swan, said the performance was by design. He said they had it in their plans to make at an attempt at the record and the meet and the good weather conditions provided that opportunity.
Swan, head coach for Platinum Force Track Club, said adding to the significance of the accomplishment is the fact that it was Dill’s first race at the individual 400m this year.
Five days ago at the Bentley University Track in Waltham, Massachusetts, Dill qualified for the World Juniors in the 800m with a time of 1:50.78.
