MONDAY, MARCH 19: Nine swimmers were chosen to represent Bermuda in the Bahamas for the Carifta Swimming Championships.

The 2012 Carifta Championships will be held from April 12 to at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatic Centre in Nassau Bahamas.

After the results were finalized from the Best of Best Shipping event on Saturday National swim coaches Ben Smith and Richard Goodwin selected a team of nine to represent Bermuda.

This team will be smaller than past years but we have some very strong competitors and several swimmers with past CARIFTA experience.

Coach Smith said “I am very proud of the swimmers that have been able to make the selection for this year’s team and I am looking forward to working with this group.  We can expect some very good results from the swimmers that we are taking.”

Last year was the first time that Shannon attended Carifta and she surprised us all.  She was the last person to qualify for the team but once at the meet dropped lots of time and made finals in several events.

This year she has consistently raced very fast and fresh off her record swims at Best of Best #2 she will be one to watch at this year’s Carifta.

Aaron waited until his last opportunity to get his second qualifying time. The excitement that he had after reaching that time and being selected for the Carifta team showed what he is all about. This will be his first opportunity at Carifta and it will be a great experience for him at this level of competition.

  • # 16 Men 11-12 100 Fly 1:09.32L

  • # 86 Men 11-12 400 Free 4:49.23L
  • # 92 Men 11-12 50 Free 27.52L

Jesse Washington will be competing in his second Carifta Swimming Championships.  Last year Jesse went from barely qualifying times to destroy all his times and making it into several finals. From that moment he has had his sights set on what he would do at this year’s Carifta. This season he has been busy re-writing the record books for the 11&12 age group. This meet will be very interesting for Jesse.  He has the potential to do something very special.

Madelyn Moore (11)
Shark Swim Club / National Team

  • # 9 Women 11-12 50 Back 37.53L

  • # 91 Women 11-12 50 Free 30.49L
  • # 103 Women 11-12 200 Back 3:07.24L

As the youngest member of this year’s team makes her first trip to Carifta, Maddie will be aiming to continue her fine local form into this regional competition.  Her times in recent meets are showing her strong ability, and we hope to see her really flourish in Bahamas.

This team will be accompanied by National Coach Ben Smith and team manager Diane Moore. The team will travel to Bahamas on April 9 to do some long course conversion in preparation for the start of the meet on April 12.

Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association president Tim Petty said: “On Behalf of Bermuda Swimming, I would like to congratulate these young swimmers for the effort and determination that has allowed them to reach the team selection. We are very proud of these athletes and wish them all the success in Bahamas.”
