FRIDAY, APRIL 13: Bermuda won three medals, including gold, on the first day of the Carifta Swimming Championships.

The event is being held in the Bahamas and started yesterday.

Jesse Washington, 12, won gold in the 100 metres Butterfly and silver in the 50 back.

And Shannon Hassell won bronze in the 50-metre backstroke.

Ben Smith, National Swim Coach for Bermuda said: ““After a very successful showing in the first morning qualifiers, we were very excited to see what the national team could do in the pressure of the finals.”

As for Washington’s swim, Smith said: “Jesse might only be 12-years-old but he had a plan for his 100 metre butterfly and was not going to be denied the gold.

“This was one of the best Bermuda swims that I have witnessed.”

“It was a very strong opening day and it was a proud moment to see our young swimmer on the podium as the national anthem played.”
