WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29: A man who yelled obscenities at police officers was today fined $800.

Jehleel Crockwell, 23, pleaded guilty to using offensive words in a public place on August 27.

The court heard at 10:30 that morning, officers were walking on Victoria Street.

The officers were walking towards the Hamilton Police Station when they saw the defendant riding an orange Yamaha bike without his helmet fastened.

Crockwell was asked to stop and began to curse loudly.

He said: “F**k, you didn’t have to do that”.

The officers told the defendant to stop cursing or he would be arrested.

Crockwell then said: “F**k, haven’t you heard of freedom of speech”.

He was then arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

The court heard he has previous convictions for similar offences.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner gave him an $800 fine.
