FRIDAY, AUGUST 17: Clearing work has begun on the first of the island’s three proposed dog parks.

The $75,000 project to create the fenced in parks in Warwick, Smiths and Devonshire was unveiled at the start of 2012 and Public Works Minister Michael Weeks had said that the first park would be open by April 1.

But the scheme has been hit by successive delays as ‘logistical aspects’ were worked on.

A spokesperson for the Parks Department said the designs of each park had been completed and tenders for the work sent out: “Plans to create three dog parks on the island have progressed to the point where they will soon become a reality. These areas have been identified as Astwood Park North, Happy Valley Park and Penhurst Park. Work will begin immediately after contractor submissions have been reviewed. The public is advised that clearance work has already begun at the Astwood Park North location to progress some works in the interim.”
