WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13: Opening salvos have been fired in what could turn out to be an ugly election battle on TV.
The ruling PLP has run a TV ad hitting back at last week’s party political broadcast by Opposition OBA leader Craig Cannonier.
The PLP ad showed a couple criticizing his performance as they watched him on TV.
An OBA spokesman said: “It is striking how negative the ad is. But that seems to be the space the PLP Government is in right now. The people of Bermuda don’t want to be dragged into that. They deserve better. They’ve got enough on their minds, like putting food on the table, paying bills, holding on to their jobs and making sure their children are safe from day to day.
“That’s what Craig and his colleagues are speaking about. People want answers. They want a way forward. They don’t want negativity.”
The Opposition OBA last week aired broadcast starring Mr Cannonier where he took aim at Government’s record on the economy and crime – especially gun crime.
Mr Cannonier said that 30 years of UBP Government was not healthy, but added that, after 14 years of the PLP “things aren’t working”.
A PLP spokesman hit back: "The OBA is right, the people want answers, however in the OBA's 150 seconds of paid advertising, they did not present the people of Bermuda with a single idea or policy.
"Nothing about jobs, nothing about the cost of living, nothing about healthcare, nothing about crime. It is no wonder why Bermudians question if they are feeling it.
"The OBA ad reminds me of that fishcake that looks appetizing, but when you chew it, it’s all potato and no fish."
