‘Fashion icon’ was surely not one of the key attributes that persuaded PLP delegates to elect Paula Cox as their leader last night, but there’s no denying she turns heads.

While some supporters who describe her as a ‘model politician’ point to her hard work and ethics — others might use the compliment in the context of fashion.

Whether she’s sporting a chic suit, a dazzling hat or full African garb, fashion watchers tell us that Ms Cox certainly has style.

She even caught the attention of television networks during the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama. She was wearing a black suit covered by a black wool coat.

As historic images were beamed around the world, there was a close-up of Ms Cox, impeccably attired in a dark suit — clearly enthralled by the occasion.

From an early age, the future leader of Bermuda developed an eye for fashion.

Sharon Bartram, owner of 27th Century Boutique, said Ms Cox’s father, the late Finance Minister Eugene Cox, was a regular customer, as is her brother Jeremy, a senior executive at the Bermuda Monetary Authority.

“Her father always shopped here for all the family’s Christmas presents,” Mrs. Bartram said.

“We’ve been in business 35 years and he always supported us.”

She describes Ms Cox as “a loyal customer… Every time a shipment comes in and we think there’s something that suits her, we give her a call and let her be the first to select the items.”

Mrs. Bartram describes Ms Cox’s style as “sophisticated… She is always well coordinated. I think she will bring a sense of style to the office of Premier.”

Ms Cox is also dressed by Bermudian designers Amethyst, Dean Williams, and tailor Evernell Davis.

Ms Cox told the Bermuda Sun: “My preference is bold, vivid colours, unless, of course, it’s a solemn occasion. I like unusual but chic.”
