WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1: New parking regulations outside Hamilton Docks are continuing to cause confusion and frustration.
Yesterday morning at least six cars parked between the junction of Court and Front Street and Supermart had been ticketed before 10am.
And nearby business owners told the Bermuda Sun that the new rules, which came into effect on July 18, were still prompting widespread anger.
One business owner, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s making people mad.
“I don’t think people understand why these new rules have been brought in and I don’t think it has been publicized very well either.
“The signage is not very good and there are still people who don’t know about the new regulations.
“It’s affecting business in the area and people are getting pretty upset when they return to their cars and find a ticket on their window.”
The new parking rules mean that motorists cannot park on Front Street between King and Court Street between 8am and 10am or 4pm and 6pm from Monday to Saturday.
Between 10am and 4pm drivers can park on the stretch of road for one hour only.
Pam Quarterly, the Managing Director of Rosa’s Cantina, added: “The new system has proved a bit confusing and I don’t think the message has got across to everyone yet.
“I am sure that along with co-business owners in the area that any time we have this kind of parking restriction it does affect business.
“I know that during the construction phase of the docks project business along the stretch was affected.
“But having said that we are very appreciative of the new side walks that have been put in place by the Corporation.
“It may take some time for the public to become fully aware of these new parking rules.”
The Corporation of Hamilton announced the parking changes on July 18 and stated that they had been implemented to ensure traffic flowed freely outside the new dock entrance.
Edward Benevides, COO for the City of Hamilton, said at the time: “As a result of the implementation of traffic lights at the intersection of Court and Front Streets, parking changes have to be instituted to ensure that traffic continues to flow freely in the area, specifically during rush hour.
“Six parking spaces have been removed from the north side of Front Street between Court and King Streets.
“As of today [July 18] there is no parking in this area from 8:00am to 10:00am and between 4:00pm and 6:00pm Monday to Saturday.”
He added: “The City of Hamilton is aware of the concerns expressed by the general public.
“These traffic and parking modifications are necessary to ensure this busy intersection allows for full line of sight of the intersection by motorists and ensures the safety of pedestrians.”
