TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 9:20PM UPDATE: Bermuda Police Service can confirm that Christophe Duerr has surrendered at Somerset Police Station this evening.

The Police would like to thank the public for their assistance in this matter.



3:30 PM: Police this afternoon scaled down a search of a heavily-wooded area in the west end in the hunt for fugitive Christopher Duerr.

A police spokesman said that teams of officers had combed the Lagoon Park area after reports from the public that Duerr could be in the area.

He added: “They looked through a densely wooded area in a one mile radius, but did not find him.”

Police also checked vehicles going in and out of the area in a bid to locate Duerr, wanted in connection with a firearms incident on Monday in the Boaz Island area.

The police spokesman said: “The search continues. If members of the public see him or know where he is, give us a call.”

He added: “People should also remember that aiding and abetting a fugitive is a crime and punishable by a fine and/or jail time.

 


MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 9PM UPDATE: As part of an ongoing proactive police operation to address gun crime, armed officers attended a residence on Seawall Drive, Boaz Island, Sandys Parish at about 11am on Monday 28th January, 2013 to effect a search.

As police arrived a man bolted from the residence clutching what is believed to be a firearm. A search to locate the man was commenced. However, he remains at large. Three other persons were arrested at the residence and are in police custody. A quantity of drugs and ammunition was seized from the house.

The Bermuda Police Service is seeking the assistance of the public to locate a person of interest. He is Mr. Christopher Duerr. Mr. Duerr is urged to make contact with the police as soon as possible.

Armed officers remain on patrol in the Sandys area and will continue their search to locate Mr. Duerr.

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Mr. Duerr is urged to call 911 and report his location. We are advising the public to not approach Mr. Duerr and allow the police to make contact with him if seen.

5PM UPDATE: Dozens of officers searched an area near Boaz Island, Sandys today looking for a man believed to be armed.

It is unclear whether officers found the man or a firearm as police have yet to confirm that information.

Armed and unarmed officers left the scene at around 4pm after combing the area for hours looking for Christopher Duerr, pictured right.

Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro told the media earlier today that at 11am the Bermuda Police Service received information in relation to a man with a firearm.

Armed officers attended the scene and the man fled from the home.

Mr Pedro named the man as Christopher Duerr. Mr Duerr now has bleached blond hair.

An additional three suspects have been arrested.

Police continued to search the surrounding areas of a yellow home opposite Woody’s Sports Bar.

Armed officers had a canine with them and at one point were heard shouting: “Bermuda police, show yourself. Canine will be released.”

There were also dozens of onlookers but the numbers decreased as time went by.

Many plain-clothes officers were seen standing outside of Woody’s in a huddle.

At point one about a dozen officers hopped over the wall surrounding the yellow house and searching all around, presumably for a firearm.

The officers left the scene at 4pm.

No shots were fired and it is unclear if Mr Duerr was arrested or if a weapon was discovered.

Just after 4pm as this reporter left the scene, officers were stopping all cars coming from the west end and searching their trunks.

This reporter’s car trunk was opened and searched.

Mr Duerr is believed to be armed and dangerous.


4PM UPDATE: Police are stopping car drivers heading east after Watford Bridge to check their car trunks.


3:30PM UPDATE: The police presence has eased off and they are no longer visible on the property, although they may be at the back of the property.

There are also fewer onlookers.


3:15PM UPDATE: Police are back on the property of the house in question.

Officers just jumped over a wall surrounding the house.

They are searching the yard area of the property.

1PM UPDATE: Dozens of onlookers are sitting and standing outside the Boaz Island area.

There is also a group of media from every outlet.

Police have moved in on a yellow house in the area. They have not moved into the house but are searching the property.

There was just shouting from police: “Bermuda police, show yourself. Canine will be released.”

They have moved in with a canine and the officers are armed.

Despite the cold temperature, dozens of people are watching the scene unfold.


12:45PM UPDATE: Police are currently standing guard before Watford Bridge and armed officers are now walking down the road past Woody’s.

The police support unit is at the scene.

There is no official police statement on what the disturbance is.

 


12:20 PM UPDATE: Armed police this morning mounted a massive manhunt in the West End of the island after reports of a firearms incident.

Officers cordoned off an area around Boaz Island in Sandys and began combing the area for what is thought to be a single suspect.

The incident happened just before 11am.

A police spokesman declined to comment on whether the incident was firearms-related.

But he confirmed: “A search for an individual is underway.”
