SATURDAY, JULY 14: A major power outage today cut power to nearly 16,000 users across the island.

The problem started around noon when three power generators at BELCO shut down at the same time.

Parts of Hamilton, eastern, central and western parishes were all affected by the ibreakdown, which hit 15,800 users.

By 1pm, however, power had been restored to nearly 6000 users, while BELCO engineers worked to restore power to other affected customers.

A spokeswoman for BELCO said the generating system was designed to protect itself - and shut down if problems were detected.

She added that three engines had shut down at the same time and that the cause of the break in service was under investigation.

She added that customers should only call the emergency 955 number if power has been restored to other properties in their area, but they were still off the grid.

She added: "Also, customers are advised to unplug small appliances, lamps and electronic equipment, especially those that are not plugged into surge protectors, until power is restored to avoid potential damage.

"BELCO thanks customers for their patience, as we work to restore power as quickly as possible."
