WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5: Kyrah Scraders could well have been a ballet dancer if her momma had got her way. But after attending a school’s sports day her mother, Sherika Scraders, realised that Kyra displayed a real aptitude for running.

At just 14, Kyra has a burning ambition to become an Olympic runner and she is hoping to get a college scholarship to help her achieve that goal.

Don Burgess asked the 14-year-old Kyra how she got interested in track and field and what she hopes the future holds for her.

How did you get into track and field?

My momma, she tried to put me in ballet at first but noticed I wasn’t interested in it.

She came to my primary school sports and saw that I might be a good runner so she contacted Pacers Track Club.

Why do you do the event(s) you do?

I do my events because I like to run long distances.

When did you think you might have a talent at track and field?

When I was seven years old.

What was your first Carifta like for you?

The first Carifta was amazing — it was like an Olympics for children.

What does it mean to you to have Carifta in Bermuda next year?

It means a lot having Carifta here in Bermuda because I will be able to run in front of friends and family.

What’s the piece best of running advice you ever received and who was it from?

Because I have always wanted to run in the Olympics the best piece of running advice that I have received is from my mother (Sherika Scraders).

To always follow my dream and never give up regardless of what obstacles I may face in my life.

Which international track and field athletes do you admire and why?

I admire Usain Bolt because he keeps me motivated that one day I will be running in the Olympics.

What do you want to do with your track ability? (College scholarship, Olympics, see the world?)

I want to get a college scholarship and go to the Olympics.

What do you want to have as a career and why?

I want to become a gym teacher because I still want to be involved in sports.
