WEDNESDAY, FEB. 9: Autism charity Tomorrow’s Voices will be better connected from now on thanks from a generous donation from Digicel.
The phone network gave BlackBerry phones with free voice and data services to the charity.
The autism early intervention centre aims to help children betwen the ages of two and 21 who are diagnosed with autism or are on the autism spectrum.
Autism is characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development — social interaction skills, communication skills, or the presence of repetitive behaviour, interests and activities.
Children attend Tomorrow’s Voices to be taught critical language skills, functional activities, socialization, initiation/ spontaneity and generalization of mastered concepts/skills. Dr. Kimberly Mills, Tomorrow’s Voices executive director, said: “Tomorrow’s Voices is engaged in training of Government school officials, college professors and other allied health professionals.
“We also supply consultative services to parents in their homes and in the community. To this end, the donated phones will allow us to stay connected with our parents and clients throughout the day and night. It will also allow our therapists to stay in touch with the main centre when they are out consulting with parents, schools and agencies in the community.”
Wayne Caines, Digicel Bermuda CEO, added: “We at Digicel are very excited to be a part of this partnership, which will enable Tomorrow’s Voices to operate more efficiently by accessing free voice and data services on donated BlackBerry devices.”
