FRIDAY, JULY 27: Just how well Flora Duffy will do at these Olympics is anyone’s guess - and she isn’t spilling the beans on how well she thinks she will do. She almost quit the sport after a disheartening performance at the Beijing Games, but she’s come roaring back to life over the past two years. Duffy’s had three top six finishes, including a first in Mexico, in the International Triathlon Union circuit since May. Duffy said she is going to put the distractions of the Olympic Village behind her in London as she concentrates on her race.

How old were you when you started triathlon and what got you involved in the sport?

I did my first triathlon when I was eight years old at the Iron Kids Triathlon at Clearwater Beach. I decided to do the race because I was in a swim club, really enjoyed running and had a bike so thought I would give it a go. I won my age group and joined a local triathlon club (Tri Hedz) and things just went from there.

What do you enjoy about triathlon?

That it combines my three favourite sports.

When did you believe or what made you might be good enough to be an Olympian some day?

Going to the Olympics and racing professionally has been a goal of mine since I was about 13 years old. I didn’t believe I could be an Olympian until I actually qualified.

What are you taking from the last Olympics to help you this time around?

The most important thing I learned from Beijing 2008 is to relax and enjoy the experience. Going to the Olympics is something few people get to experience so this time around I will take in every moment and enjoy the atmosphere regardless of how the race goes.

How will have Tyler Butterfield also doing triathlon add to these Olympics for you?

It will be great to have Tyler there. It is always nice to have a teammate competing in the same sport. I’m looking forward to cheering him on.

Besides the competition, what are you most looking forward to about the Olympics?

I’m looking forward to watching a lot of events and enjoying my time in the village. It will also be great to be back in London. It is a fantastic city with lots of great place to explore.

What’s your goal for placement at the Olympics and why?

I’ll keep this a secret.
