Man admits assaulting police

MONDAY, JULY 23: A man who assaulted police and used offensive words was fined $600 today.

Delano Williams, 38, admitted to the incident, which took place yesterday in Devonshire. The court heard officers were called to the parking lot at Belvin’s Variety.

Crown counsel Maria Sofianos told the court the defendant was standing outside the store and the police went to speak with him.

Ms Sofianos said: “He then started becoming threatening.

“He said, ‘F**k you, who the f**k do you think you are?’ to the officers.”

Williams then tried to punch one of the officers in the chest and spat on another. When the police tried to restrain him, Williams attempted to kick them.

He was handcuffed, arrested and taken to the Hamilton Police Station. At the station, Williams again tried to kick an officer.

Addressing the court, Williams said: “I apologize for my actions. I was intoxicated at the time.

“The man in the shop, I gave him $50 and he gave me the wrong change. I felt I was short changed.

“I am from the area and I am a very polite person but I am guilty.”
