WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20: This summer is being hailed as The Summer Of Love as Bermuda gears up for a host of events celebrating John Lennon.
Tomorrow marks the beginning of a series of high profile events with the unveiling of a tributary sculpture — Double Fantasy — at the Botanical Gardens, and the opening of Imagine the Art of John Lennon exhibition at the Masterworks Museum.
Local artist Graham Foster was commissioned to create the sculpture. He said: “I wanted identifiable imagery, but wanted to steer clear of the “typical” things associated with John Lennon; peace signs, doves etc. I decided to approach the sculpture in an expressionistic way.”
It will be around nine feet high and weigh approximately 2,000lbs.
The exhibition will include a selection of lithographs from Lennon’s Bag One Portfolio – a suite of prints published and hand-signed by John Lennon in 1970, centered around his wedding in Gibraltar to Yoko Ono and posthumous limited edition prints signed by Yoko Ono.
These events will be followed by a concert on September 21 featuring a host of local artists as well as international reggae star Maxi Priest.
The exhibition opens at 5:30pm at Masterworks and the unveiling is at 6pm with a video greeting by Yoko Ono. An EP featuring four Lennon songs will also be released.
