Former ‘Not The Um Um Players’ comedian Christopher Broadhurst is making his return to the local entertainment scene with a new night of music and fun at Daylesford Theatre.

Hoot Night is primarily a gathering of musicians and singers doing sets of 15 to 20 minutes each every third Thursday of the month from 7pm starting from tomorrow night.

Music is the main focus but the spoken word is not beyond possibility — a comedian might decide to perform 15 minutes of stand-up.

The list of performers so far is Chris Broadhurst, Derek Jones, Joe Bento, Val Sherwood, Mike Davis, Peter Haynes, and Jenn Osmond.

Asked why he decided to start up the Hoot Night he told the Bermuda Sun: “Because you’ll never hear me say there are too many places in Bermuda for performers to do their stuff.

“Why not Karaoke? Believe it or not, most people do not go to Karaoke to hear good performers so there is a difference. They go to hear someone’s friend have one too many and eventually get on stage and murder Born to be Wild.”

As for the name, Broadhurst explained: “Whenever I travel, I look for an open mic and I go and do a short set. Usually it is called ‘open mic’ or something generic like that.

“A couple of years ago I went to Jackson New Hampshire and went to an open mic called Hoot Night. I wasn’t sure what it was but it sure sounded like fun. The name just stuck with me and the guys in Jackson are thrilled we’re going to have a Bermuda chapter of Hoot Night. I am going to Jackson to
perform again at their ‘Hoot Night’ later this month.

“The idea for the 15-minute format is that if the one you’re listening to now is not your cup of tea, the next one might be. By the end of the evening everyone has been entertained.”
