TUESDAY, FEB. 28: To celebrate the special relationship between the United States and Bermuda, the U.S. Consulate has planned several events in March.
On March 1, Consul General Grace Shelton and Premier the Hon. Paula Cox, JP, MP will co-host a panel discussion at Camden to examine the multifaceted ties that bind our two nations together.
Other panel members will include Mr. Walton Brown and Mr. Donald Kramer. The invitation-only event will be covered by the media. Panel members will speak on topics ranging from Bermuda’s place within U.S. foreign policy to the fundamental drivers of the U.S.-Bermuda alliance, the past as precursor to modern bilateral relations, Bermuda as the U.S.’ reinsurer, and the role of art in the bilateral relationship.
Following up on the themes of the panel discussion, on March 2-14 Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art will host a special Consulate photographic exhibit, “Between Friends: 65 Years of Bermudian-American Diplomatic Relations,” that pictorially represents the sustained and close relationship between the United States and Bermuda.
The exhibit begins with President Harry Truman’s vacation cruise to the Island in 1946 and includes Bermudian leadership visits to Washington, DC. Among the 26 photographs are formal photographs of American presidents in Bermuda to participate in international summits juxtaposed with never-before-seen informal photos of presidents enjoying Bermuda.
The presidential libraries provided most of the photographs and assisted with research.
Consul General Shelton said, “These photographs reflect the deep and abiding bonds of our friendship, and that is something to celebrate.”
Our strong relationship is based on many factors, including geography, a common language, trade, close business relations, and shared cultural values.
There is a solid connection through art between our two countries, thus Masterworks, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is an ideal venue to display the photographic exhibit.
American artists like Winslow Homer and Georgia O’Keeffe contributed to the launch of Bermuda’s tourism industry in the twentieth century, and over 80 percent of Masterwork’s paintings are by American artists who found their muse in Bermuda.
Diplomacy aims to nurture relationships and to keep them growing even stronger.
The panel discussion and the photographic exhibit do just that.
