SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28:A tropical storm warning is in effect in Bermuda today as Hurricane Sandy tracks north east.

The hurricane is a threat to island, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.

Forecasters are predicting that Sandy's closest point of approach is 9pm tonight when the hurricane will be 342 nautical miles west north west of the island.

The local forecast states: "Strong winds will increase to tropical storm force (mainly in the western marine area) later today through Monday.

"Building swells will create dangerous rip currents along the south shore. Conditions will begin to ease late Monday as Sandy turns northwest toward New Jersey."

The weather today is forecast to be cloudy with occasional showers, with a risk of thunder later in the day.

Gale force winds are expected later in the evening.
