Five fires last weekend

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to five confirmed fires over the weekend. Fire Service Spokesperson Lieutenant Leonard Davis reported that the fire service responded to two vehicle fires, two brush fires and one large pile of burning debris.
At approximately 7:15 pm on Saturday May 31st, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of an unknown fire near Georges Bay Road, Southampton. The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the mentioned incident with two fire appliances staffed with eight firefighters. The fire crews arrived on scene to find a large pile of wood from a demolished building fully involved in fire. The wood pile area was approximately 20’ x 10’ and several feet high. Four firefighters dressed in self-contained breathing apparatus and equipped with a 2 ½” hose line gated down to a 1 ½” hose lines proceeded to extinguish the fire. The fire required an excavator to help turn over the debris and over 3000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire The fire took approximately 2 hours to completely extinguish. An investigation was conducted which determined the cause of the fire resulted from the demolished building debris spontaneously igniting.
At approximately 9:23 pm on Saturday May 31st, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a Vehicle Fire near Wellman Lane, Warwick. The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the mentioned incident with one fire appliance staffed with four firefighters. The Fire Services arrived on scene to discover a vehicle fully involved in fire along with surrounding brush area. Two firefighters dressed in self-contained breathing apparatus and equipped with a 1 ½” hose line proceeded to extinguish the fire. The fire took approximately 10 minutes to extinguish. An investigation was conducted which discovered that the car had been abandoned for several months with individuals being seen inside the vehicle prior to it igniting.
At approximately 10:33 pm on Saturday May 31st, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a Brush Fire near Sommersall Road, Smiths. The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the mentioned incident with one fire appliance staffed with four firefighters. The Fire Services arrived on scene to discover a small area brush approximately 5’x 5’ involved in fire. The fire was extinguished within 5 minutes with a booster reel. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
At approximately 2:50 am on Sunday June 1st, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a Vehicle Fire near 12 Gibbs Hill Road, Southampton. The incident was reported as one vehicle and three motor bikes fully involved in fire. The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the mentioned incident with three fire appliances staffed with nine firefighters. The Fire Services arrived on scene to discover one car and two motor bikes fully involved in fire. A third bike had been moved to a safe location. Two firefighters dressed in self-contained breathing apparatus and equipped with a 1 ½” hose line proceeded to extinguish the fire. The fire took approximately 15 minutes to extinguish. An adjacent property sustained direct heat and smoke damage. Due to the nature of the incident, a fire investigation was called to the scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
At approximately 10:50 pm on Sunday June 1st, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a Brush Fire near 11 Judkin Lane, Smith’s. The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the mentioned incident with one fire appliances staffed with four firefighters. The Fire Services arrived on scene to discover a large area of brush approximately 20’ x 20’ fully involved in fire. Two firefighters equipped with a booster reel proceeded to extinguish the fire. The fire took approximately 20 minutes to extinguish. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
