SUNDAY, MAY 1, 9:45PM UPDATE: A 22-year-old man was gunned down in the early hours of today (Sunday) in what police believe was case of mistaken identity.

Jason Smith, of Warwick, was shot at least twice as he left a house at the junction of Overview Hill and North Shore Road, Pembroke.

He is the fifth man to be shot dead this year.

One neighbour said she was woken by the sound of two gunshots just before 4am.

She added: “Somebody just screamed and then it all went quiet after that.

“The police were there right after that – I didn’t hear sirens but I saw a lot of flashing lights.

“It’s strange – I know nothing about guns, but when you hear a gun shoot, you know what it is.

“It’s very frightening that this kind of thing can happen at the bottom of your own hill.”
Mr Smith was shot around 3.50am.

He was rushed to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, but died as a result of his injuries.

Police Assistant Commissioner David Mirfield said: “The Bermuda Police Service has launched an investigation into this deplorable act.”

He added: “Initial inquiries suggest that this victim may not have been the intended target.”

The road was cordoned off for several hours as police forensic teams and detectives combed the area.

Mr Mirfield added: “This is the fifth fatal shooting this year and clearly a situation that the police are taking extremely seriously.

“We continue our investigations into this incident as well as other murders.”

Investigators are looking to speak to anyone who saw a short, stocky man in the area around the time of the murder.

In a statement this evening Detective Superintendent Antoine Daniels, confirmed:
