Are you interested in a career in Bermuda’s insurance and reinsurance industry?

The Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies (BFIS) provides scholarships and advice to students interested in such careers.

Our office, located across from the bus terminal in Hamilton, welcomes anyone wanting to find out more about careers in insurance.

Mentoring

We can give advice on the education and skills needed, and can provide interested students with an entry-point into this industry.

If you need help in paying for college, BFIS offers several scholarships each year ranging from $15,000 to $30,000 a year.

More than 100 students have been awarded BFIS scholarships, and 20 BFIS scholars are currently studying for degrees at universities in the US, Canada and England.

You can apply online at www.bermudascholarships.com.

The preferred subjects which BFIS offers scholarships for are: Insurance; risk management; finance; economics; actuarial science; mathematics; accounting, corporate law; and computer science.

Other subjects relevant to the insurance industry will also be accepted.

Up to 10 scholarships are available for students, from freshman to senior years and postgraduate.

Scholarship recipients must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA or above.

If you need advice, the BFIS Mentor Network programme also matches students planning or starting a career in insurance with people already established in the industry.

Questions

Networking lunches and other events for students are held during summer and Christmas vacations.

If you want to learn more about the industry, the BFIS ‘Intro-to-Insurance’ Summer Programmes take place over two to three weeks.

Twelve students, divided into three teams, experience in depth the insurance markets in either London, Bermuda or Chicago.

These structured programmes — which include meetings, presentations and work shadowing with insurance professionals — are open to undergraduate students who have completed either their junior or senior year of university.

If you want to learn more about the different careers on offer within insurance, BFIS makes annual presentations to high school and Bermuda College students, showing them the great career opportunities in Bermuda.

BFIS alumni now working in insurance are on hand to answer any questions.
