You’re as close to a new bike as the centrally located Autobahn Cycles. This is where partners, Gilbert Amaral and Brian Bennett have taken their passion and love of motorcycles and promised a special inventory.
Gilbert Amaral said: “The Torq line of bikes are manufactured solely for us. Nobody else can get them unless through us.”
He noted the dream of the 16 year-old — a step-through, 50cc Torq Hawk.
According to Mr Amaral, the Hawk can be repowered to 125cc when the owner reaches 18 simply by upgrading the motor. The older teen doesn’t have to buy another bike.
“Most parents are extremely taken aback that our Torq Hawk bikes are upgradable. The Hawk is our most popular bike; we have a hard time keeping (it) in stock.”
Autobahn’s $800 savings-special on the normally priced $3,295 Torq Fresh is another example of a serendipitous purchase.
“For the whole month of June, the Torq Fresh is on sale for $2,495, and that’s basic price, without licence and insurance.”
But Autobahn can facilitate TCD testing for the Torq Fresh, along with licence, insurance and free helmet, for an on-the-road price of $2,995.
That, according to Mr Amaral, is for a smooth-riding, smooth handling 50cc two-stroke replica of the Honda Scoopy 125cc.
“It’s very easy to operate, has a side-stand feature, electric start and kick-start, under seat storage [and] front and rear disk brakes.”
“We’ve given at least 90 to 100 16-year-olds their first bike … They come in to get a lot of accessories, like our ‘Tasty Nuts’ anodized bolts and custom seat covers… with graphics already on them.”
Wheels and tyres are also available.
Autobahn boasts of being Bermuda’s first and singular motorcycle collision repair centre. The company works on all makes and models of cycles.
“You can get a damaged part replaced and scratched parts re-painted, which ends up being cheaper for the customer and the insurance company,” Mr Amaral said.
In addition to after-sales service, Autobahn Cycles features stickers and graphics, custom painting and airbrushing of bikes, helmets and T-shirts.
“Airbrushing can start off at $200, and it just depends on the amount of detail.”
In-stock parts for all Thai-made bikes have been ordered, including body panels, front forks and collision parts.
“We keep all our parts in stock all the time. We have a full parts department.”
Autobahn Cycles offer express flat tyre repair within two hours of drop-off and will do cycle pick-ups island-wide.
On top of its own popular Torq line, Autobahn also sells Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha cycles.
The company encourages its customers to practice basic preventive maintenance.
“With Bermuda’s environment, we suggest lubricating all switches, cables and chains … WD-40 is the best for your switches and electrical contacts because it displaces water.”
Autobahn has succeeded in its goal, according to Mr Amaral, who said: “Our goal is to give good service and a good product at an affordable price. Have we met our goal? I would think so. We have happy customers, repeat customers. Every day, we’re taking on new customers.”
Because Autobahn’s Torq brand bikes are made-to-order, each run comes in a single colour.
“But with our in-house painting, it can be whatever colour you imagine,” Mr Amaral said.
