Premium products take the 'ouch' out of waxing

Your legs may be your best feature. Defined thighs, noticeably toned calves and slim ankles always attract attention.
But what are you going to do about that gorilla-like hair? Have distractions at work and elsewhere caused you to forget the feel of soft, smooth, sensual limbs from which even heavier, hair-free legs would benefit?
You've invested countless efforts in living your life and perfecting your dreams. Don't stop now. Investigate waxing for the silky-legged lady you can be.
Of course, you can't completely discount the stories you've heard about the pain of waxing, itchy skin and after-blotch. These are the 'grin and bear it' side effects of older waxing products, some of which are still in use on the island. But ask which brands your salon employs before you make an appointment.
Beauty therapist, Jacqueline Richardson specializes in waxing at her Wax Room Plus.
"I offer all the waxing services using top of the line premium waxes," Ms. Richardson said. "... The new hard waxes on the market are practically pain free, using resin and rosins which make the waxes pliable... more comfortable."
Ms. Richardson's 'Berins Blue' hard wax and 'Ease' strip wax originate in France at a firm of third generation wax makers.
"These new waxes are used at lower temperatures making them less likely to burn and lift the skin. They are also used with oil to help protect the skin... reduce the pain factor," she said.
Ms. Richardson is also seeking to counteract what she believes are the effects of the Bermuda climate on the efficacy of waxing products.
"The climate here can change the way a product works, and the change in temperature, hot to cold and vice versa plays a part in the effectiveness of the treatment," she said.
Climate specific
So as summer nears this year, the Wax Room Plus will be offering the additional benefit of a product called 'Jet Set', which is specifically formulated for a hot and humid climate.
"Many therapists the world over are changing to these new waxes, and most colleges and training establishments are now training the therapists in their use," Ms. Richardson said.
Ms. Richardson also provides her clients with aftercare sheets.
"Exfoliation and moisturizing are one of the key elements to maintaining healthy skin," she said. "Many ladies on the island have major problems with ingrown hairs. By following the aftercare, we hope to eliminate this problem or make it more manageable until we can find the right treatment for them that will stop it happening."
The beauty therapist recommends two to three waxing appointments prior to a big event to balance a previously creamed or shaven hair removal regime with the normal cycle of hair growth. Waxing thereafter can be done on a monthly basis.
"The most popular treatments... are eyebrows, under-arm, leg and any of the intimate waxing, of which there are many," Ms. Richardson said.
The Wax Room Plus, at 36 North Shore Road, Pembroke features, for example, eight specialty waxings, among them regular and French bikini, Brazilian and Bollywood.
"The Wax Room Plus is near enough to town, but far enough away not to have you stressed looking for a parking space," Ms. Richardson said.
Clients are welcomed as early as 7:30am, with late hours by appointment.
"Wax Room Plus can also give that individual, special attention that some salons can't give due to high volume of clients. It's like having your own therapist," she said.
And friends are invited to enjoy the Wax Room's services in the privacy of one of their homes. For information, call 292-1866 or 516-9470, or e-mail jacquiejaxs@yahoo.com.
