Whether you are renovating or downsizing your home or business, a storage facility can keep your belongings secure at a reasonable cost.

Bermuda Public Storage offers access to 500 storage units of varying sizes in a climate-controlled, dust and damp-free environment.

Clients can back up their vehicles and containers right up to the 5,000 lb elevators.

The loading dock is situated in the entrance, enabling clients to unload in an environment protected from the elements.

Troy Burrows, owner, said: “Customers like being able to drive up to the elevators. If the weather is bad they can move their stuff without getting wet in the rain.”

Since opening in November, Bermuda Public Storage on Elliott Street has already filled half of its 500 units.

Situated over six floors, they range in size from 5ft x 5 ft to 10 ft x 13 ft. There is also one unit sized 18 ft x 40 ft.

Mr Burrows said the business also has room for expansion as the building is eight storeys in total.

“So far we’ve filled up about half of the units. We may add units on the other two floors once the six fill up,” he said.

Clients have 24-hour access to the building by punching in an access code. Each floor has security camera surveillance and automated lighting, ensuring safety.

The building and elevators also have their own generator in the event of any power loss.

Mr Burrows said he has “all kinds of people” occupying the units.

“I have a lot of businesses storing their inventories here. They range from hair salons and nursery schools to construction companies and international business. It is quite varied.

“We also have quite a few online stores who have set up here. The companies order goods online and then store them here, bringing their customers in to show them what they have.

“These online stores can’t afford to pay for a storefront in Hamilton but they can create a showroom here and bring customers in to see their merchandise.

“It is easy to do and so I think the market for this will only grow.

“For a few hundred dollars people can have a 10ft x 10 ft unit and set it up like a store.

“The constant climate-controlled temperature also prevents mould and mildew, as it stays dry here.”

Mr Burrows said the units are also popular with individuals who are either renovating their homes or downsizing in the recession.

“People are moving from two-bedroom to one-bedroom apartments to save money,” he said.

“In this recession, people are losing or changing jobs, so they are downsizing but need somewhere to store their furniture and other stuff.

“I also have people using the facility as an extension of their home, such as to store Christmas items.

“People moving house or renovating their home also bring their stuff here, so it doesn’t get dusty or dirty.”

The monthly prices for the units are:

• 5ft x 5ft, $95

• 5ft x 10ft, $190

• 10ft x 10ft, $375

• 10ft x 20ft, $750

• 10ft x 13ft, $487.50

All the units are 8ft in height.

Mr Burrows said: “We have the best prices.”

Since he started his project three years ago, two other storage facilities have also opened on the island.

“We are all doing quite well,” said Mr Burrows.

“Anywhere else in the world, storage is big business. I saw a niche in the market because in Bermuda we don’t have anywhere to put anything, so there was a necessity for such a facility. I was surprised no one had done it before.

“Business is going well. At Bermuda Public Storage we have the biggest facility on the island with the highest number of units, at the best prices.”

The official opening for Bermuda Public Storage will take place next Wednesday. There will be a ribbon cutting at 1pm and an open house until 5.30pm.
