Preparing your home for visitors may not just mean tidying up the guest bedroom, but could also involve hiring equipment.

Whether your guests are elderly, disabled or newborn babies, you may need facilities to make their stay more comfortable.

This could involve obtaining a hoist or a folding walker for a senior relative, or perhaps installing a high chair for a baby.

At the Bermuda Red Cross, you can find this equipment for hire at reasonable costs.

Not only does the charity provide essential healthcare items but also baby equipment, meaning you don’t have to splash your cash to make your guests feel at home.

For seniors or the physically challenged, there are wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers, hoists, bed rails, bath seats, bed tables, commodes and raised toilet seats.

The charity also provides IV (intravenous) poles for people needing IV medication. And there are even CPM (Continuous Passive Motion) machines for hire for anyone who is recovering from knee surgery.

As for the younger generation, the Bermuda Red Cross has strollers, play pens, high chairs, car seats, cots and cribs all available for hire.

Reservations

Susan Black, a volunteer with the charity, said: “The items can be hired indefinitely. The minimum rental period is a week and some people pay on a monthly basis.

“We also have hospital beds we can set up, but these are for longer term rentals as opposed to temporary stays.

“Most of the baby equipment is $10 a week to hire, and the cots are $15.

“Wheelchairs are $10 a week and most of the other items are between $5-8.

“If you have extra guests we also have roll-away beds for hire for $20 a week.

“All people have to do is call us and we can reserve the piece of equipment by putting it to one side for them, ready for pick-up.

“We are well-equipped and so people can call a week in advance or even on the day.

“We have a dedicated building for the rental equipment, with double doors, so people can back their cars up and just load up.”

The Bermuda Red Cross provides essential healthcare items to up to 800 renters annually. Some rental costs are recoverable through health insurance.

The charity, which assists in providing humanitarian aid worldwide, celebrated its 60th anniversary this year.

It also supplies First Aid kits, AED (Automated External Defibrillator) machines, pocket masks and Laerdal Face Shields, as well as First Aid, CPR and AED courses.

Volunteers are always needed, particularly strong men to help lift heavy equipment.

BERMUDA RED CROSS equipment rental is located at Charleswood, 9 Berry Hill Road, Paget. It is open 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am-12noon Saturdays. Call 236-8253 or 236-8277, or e-mail redcross@logic.bm.
