WEDNESDAY, NOV. 14: PLP candidates today called on the OBA to release a “secret plan” that was allegedly hatched to rebrand the UBP after a party split.

The call from Darius Tucker came after former UBP leader Kim Swan said on ZBM TV news that an overseas consultant recommended a split and a reunion under a new name after the last election.

Former UBP leader Wayne Furbert — who crossed the floor in 2008 and is now a PLP Minister — made the same claim almost a year ago.

The allegation was denied then by interim OBA leader John Barritt.

Mr Tucker said: “The public needs to know exactly what’s in this plan and what the OBA is hiding.”

The Bermuda Democratic Alliance (BDA) split from the UBP after the 2007 poll and in May last year joined up with the bulk of the UBP to create the OBA.

Mr Tucker — the PLP candidate for Paget West — said at a press conference today: “Bermudians deserve to know the truth — that’s why we’re calling on the OBA to release the secret plan. It’s transparency — so the Bermudian public can know what’s going on.”

The OBA did not immediately respond to requests for comment today.

But reacting to Mr Furbert’s claim last year, Mr Barritt told The Royal Gazette: “I can assure Mr Furbert and the people of Bermuda that we are not following the script of something that consultants suggested years ago.

“What we are trying to do is write a new script in politics in Bermuda, not just for ourselves but for Bermuda.”

Mr Swan announced this week that he would be standing not the UBP but as an independent candidate in the December 17 General Election.
