The ‘Five Star’ Barber Shop on King St. was bustling this afternoon, as young boys from Berkley, CedarBridge, Elliot Primary School and Whitney Institute lined up for a free ‘back-to-school’ haircut.

The wait began at 9am, as the line of boys continued to grow well into the late afternoon.  Organizers Wayne and Dwayne Caines were very prepared for the day's event, having plenty of food, water and music to keep the young people entertained.

Mother and volunteer, Masante Maryam, was absolutely thrilled with the Five Star team explaining, “ The barbers are wonderful and the Caines brothers did a tremendous job putting this all together… it’s just been a real community effort and everybody pitched in and did their part.”

In addition to free haircuts, the boys left with complimentary rucksacks stuffed with notebooks, dictionaries, pens and assorted pencils. Bermuda CableVision also arrived on the scene to hand out free gym bags to all the students, and Ms. Maryam added: “I think today was a wonderful thing.”  Her son, seven-year-old Jahkoda Maryam, returns to Elliot Primary on Friday — excited about his haircut — but maybe a not as excited about the end of summer.

Ultimately the event was a hit. All the mothers were grateful for the help of the Caines brothers and the work taken on by the Five Star barbers, making the ‘back-to-school’ frenzy a little less costly and a lot more fun for everyone involved.
