A Devonshire man today denied causing more than $3,000 in damage to the Hamilton Police Station.

Jerry Williams, 49, pleaded not guilty to damaging the sprinkler system on June 16. The damage was $3620.

He also denied unlawfully causing the fire alarm to go off on the same date.

Crown counsel Nicole Smith told the court Mr Williams had been arrested on another matter and was taken to the cells early that morning.

On CCTV, officers allegedly saw the defendant take a cigarette lighter out of his pocket and hold it while lit up to the fire alarm. This caused the alarm and sprinkler system to go off, flooding the cell area.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Mr Williams into custody until his trial on Friday afternoon.
