Owner of The Cellar Dennie O’Connor has spoken of his dismay at the closure of his club The Cellar at the Fairmont Southampton Resort.

Eleven Bermudian part and full-time staff members have lost their jobs as a result of the move by Fairmont management and O’Connor is working on a proposal have the club reopened.

The club was revamped in 2010 as an exclusive venue.

Speaking to the Bermuda Sun, O’Connor said: “We are talking about a club that averaged 33,000 guests last year.

“We are probably Bermuda’s premier nightclub — we've had no incidents. We are dealing with a mature crowd and tourists.

“I am trying to get it reopened because it is such an investment. It is more than a shame — it is a nightmare. We are the only club in that area and people feel safe to come to.”

O’Connor has given management the option of opening the venue just for island visitors but according to O’Connor, management has not commented on this as of yet.

He is now working on a proposal for the club over including local live performances and disco DJ Bubbles. He will present the proposal to the Fairmont in a week.

O’Connor added: "The GM and hotel manager Rita Healy have asked us to come up with a new concept not involving disco."
