A duo of world-famous wrestlers are planning to make a fishing show about catching blue marlin around the island this
summer.

John Bradshaw Layfield — known by his ring name JBL — who owns a home in Bermuda, says fellow WWE superstar Shawn Michaels hopes to make a fishing special focusing on Bermuda this July at the same time of the Bermuda Billfish Blast and the Blue Marlin World Cup.

Mr Layfield says he’s fished in the local tournaments in the past and last year brought his WWE Monday Night Raw broadcasting partner Michael Cole.

This year, he says, Mr Michaels, his friend of 20 years, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011, is planning to make a television programme of this year’s early July fishing competitions.

Mr Michaels currently hosts MRA Hunting on the Outdoor Channel.

“There’s some of the best marlin in the world around here,” said Mr Layfield, who is a successful stock investor, also features as a guest panelist on Fox News Channel’s The Cost of Freedom block of programming.

“We’re looking for it to have a travel-show type feel. A special on
Bermuda.”

Bermuda Tourism Authority has been crucial in making the show a reality, said Mr Layfield.

Bermuda Tourism
Authority CEO Bill Hanbury welcomed the development.

"The BTA was excited that Bermuda had been chosen as the location for filming this popular US television show,” he said. “John Layfield is a terrific Bermuda supporter and his popularity with American sports enthusiasts certainly helps in promoting Bermuda.

The island’s beauty is to be broadcast to possibly millions of viewers world-wide who can potentially travel to our island destination.

“BTA considers this a promotional ‘gift’ to be received enthusiastically.”

He added:“We welcome these opportunities that position Bermuda positively and, in this case, show off Bermuda as a world-class fishing destination favoured by a keen sports celebrity and enthusiasts like John Layfield.”
