In this tough economy we hear of businesses  closing down each week, but one company reporting a healthy outlook is Medical House Ltd.

Mickey Robinson, owner and managing director, recently doubled the size of his business and has expanded his range of goods.

Mr Robinson started the medical supplies company in 1995 in Dundonald Street, Hamilton, before moving to Union Street and then Mill Reach Lane, Pembroke, eight years ago.

When another tenant in Mill Reach Lane decided to relocate last year, Mr Robinson saw an opportunity to expand.

He said: “We’ve always had a tremendous amount of goods but we didn’t have the space because we were sharing the building with another company.

“Last summer we got the opportunity to take over the other half of the building. This doubled our retail space and parking.

“Although we are in challenging economic times right now in Bermuda, we took this opportunity because our customers had been asking for better access, more parking and greater space.”

He added: “Medical supplies is a growing market in Bermuda.

“It’s a rough economy right now but we are positioning ourselves well for the future.

“Everyone is feeling the pinch right now but Bermuda will come out of this, and there will be better times ahead.

“We have carried out major renovations to prepare ourselves for future growth.”

Medical House Ltd now has 3,800 sq ft of retail space and has added a medical supplies store on the ground floor.

The second floor houses offices and the storeroom, and the third floor is the uniform and work wear store. This has also undergone an expansion. Now in addition to scrubs in every colour, you can buy industrial work wear, chefs’ attire, plus a full range of footwear.

Mr Robinson said: “We’ve extended our lines, so now have footwear for everyone, whether you are walking, running or doing office work. We have steel-toed shoes and boots for construction as well.

“But we haven’t lost our focus on orthopaedically-correct, comfortable shoes.

“We also have diabetic footwear, which has no seams to avoid rubbing or negatively impacting on the skin.”

He added: “We’ve also introduced a lower price selection for scrubs.

“We’ve always had top end quality, but now we’ve introduced a lower price selection for medical uniforms, in order to assist people in these tough economic times.”

On the ground floor, people can find all their home healthcare needs such as wheelchairs, walkers, medical supplies and respiratory equipment.

Mr Robinson said: “We are well known for our home healthcare supplies, bath safety products and equipment for the physically-challenged.

“We’ve now expanded our lines to include children’s diapers — the best quality at the best price on the island.

“We also have new commercial cleaning supplies to go with our soap, paper and other janitorial products.

“Another new focus is toilet paper and kitchen roll towels.

“You can buy them individually or as a case. We aim to have the best prices on the island.”

Medical House Ltd stocks products from more than 30 leading manufacturers in apparel, medical and dental supplies.

Its client list includes King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, nursing homes, GP and dental offices, and physicians.

The company employs a staff of six, who include a registered nurse and an occupational therapist, Tinee Furbert.

Mr Robinson said: “Tinee is a tremendous asset for our customers because they will be able to get knowledge which you couldn’t necessarilty obtain at a pharmacy.

“We have also introduced new orthopaedic and physiotherapy products.

“Tinee is here to assist each and everyone, to give advice and assist you with your needs.”

As from March 1, Medical House Ltd will also start a seniors’ discount day.

Mr Robinson said: “We offer a very personal service. We try to develop relationships with customers on a personal basis.

“We only try to promise what we can deliver, and deliver what we promise. That’s our aim, to satisfy customers and to provide them with a better shopping environment.”
