WEDNESDAY, JULY 6: Nigel Clacken has been associated with Simon Leighton for about seven years. The mason has worked for the past four-and-a-half years with Concrete Works, a division of Mr Leighton’s Corner Stone Construction.
Mr Clacken, who is Mr Leighton’s longest serving employee, specializes in masonry, construction and painting. He helps build moulds, preps samples for trivet bar or other inlay, sands the pieces, assists with the application of sealers and so on.
He previously worked for another contractor, but learned of Mr Leighton’s opening and grabbed the opportunity.
“I was right here at the right time,” Mr Clacken said.
He said he’s happy to be with Concrete Works, and that the nine to 10 hour day doesn’t bother him.
“If the work is there and the boss need help... extra hour or two, we just fill in.”
He said he admires Mr Leighton.
“He’s not a person who will rough you up, push you around. He don’t stick around behind you all day, a nice person to work with.”
Mr Clacken’s craft satisfies him in a way another profession would not.
He said: “At the end of the day, I like to see when the job come out perfect.”
