WEDNESDAY, JULY 4: If you’ve had a scratch or a bump, you can now get all your body and paintwork done at a one-stop auto shop in the west end.

Paint ‘n’ Stuff Ltd has opened a body shop in Industrial Park Road, Southampton, which can accommodate vehicles ranging from motorcycles to minibuses and trucks.

The expansion from the company’s original retail store in Middle Road, Warwick, was a big move for Eugene Simmons.

Co-owner Mr Simmons wanted to pursue his dream of opening a garage but was apprehensive due to the economic climate.

He said: “The body shop became available in August.

“It was something I wanted to do but I wasn’t sure whether I should take it on in the middle of a recession.

“But I said, ‘Why not? Let’s go ahead and see’, and we came here in November.”

Donnavise Simmons, his wife, is now in charge of the administration and paperwork for the family business, which is owned by a group of shareholders.

“Right now business is pretty good,” said Mr Simmons.

“Although business has fallen off for the automotive industry in the recession, it’s still viable.

Regulations

“It’s an industry that is always needed, and we have strict regulations in Bermuda.

“For example, you can’t take your car to TCD if it’s falling apart — you need to get some bodywork done first.”

The company employs one full-time bodyworker and spray painter, Reynold Santoyo, and also a freelance specialist, Andre Lambe.

Mr Simmons started Paint ‘n’ Stuff in February 2004, specializing in automotive paint for cars. He sells the Barbados brand Automotive Art, manufactured by DeBeer in Holland.

Paint products for sale at the shop in Industrial Park Road include acrylic, lacquer, hardener, clear, reducer and primers.

Mr Simmons also stocks bodyfiller, tape, sandpaper and accessories such as car cleaning products.

Customized

He can mix up any colour you like for your vehicle from a choice of 76 toners.

He said: “Having the body shop here helps because the business has become a one-stop shop.

“People come here to buy their auto paint and when they realize they can also get their car painted on-site, they ask for an estimate, so it means we pick up business. It’s worked out well.

“We’ve had everything from cars and taxis to minibuses and dump trucks.”

Mr Simmons can also create customized colours for motorcycles, called ‘custom candy’.

These are shades of red, green, yellow, orange, blue, black or brown which are unavailable in a showroom.

“Some people want their motorcycle to look a bit different, so we also do that,” said Mr Simmons.

“There is a lot more work which goes into it and so it is more expensive.

“But you won’t find those colours in a showroom, they are not your conventional dealership colours.”

Paint ‘n’ Stuff Ltd is now forging a reputation for customer service in its bodywork repairs.

“We just about cover every aspect of car repair, from your basic fender bender right through to having the whole car repainted,” said Mr Simmons.

“It doesn’t matter what condition the vehicle comes in as.

“We also do metal patching which is more permanent than bodyfiller, which comes out after a while.

“Reynold is certified as a spot welder and in the use of acetylene and oxygen for welding, so he’s a professional.” Mrs Simmons said: “We can work on two to three cars at a time, depending on the amount of work that is required.

“We work into the evenings and weekends as needed.

“If it’s something like a scratch we can get it back to the customer within three hours.

“We can sand it down, prime it and spray it, and it will be dry ready for them to pick back up in a few hours.

“We have customers from all over the island. If they need their car back in a timely manner we will try to work to their schedule.

“It’s all about customer satisfaction.”
