PW Marine has been serving mariners for more than 100 years and prides itself on its customer service.

The family business is part of Waterfront Properties Ltd., which dates back to 1844 and which includes the Waterfront Marina and gas station, Miles Market, and Harry’s Bar and Restaurant. Company president is William Cox.

“William’s grandfather was Sir John Cox and the company has been handed down from generation to generation,” said Alan Brooks, PW Marine’s general manager.

PW Marine sells everything you need on the water: Rope; paint; oils; lubricants; filters; nuts, bolts and screws; electrical components; barbecues; coolers; deck shoes; batteries; rainwear; charts; stereos; Bermuda flags; lights; pumps; fenders; anchors; hull and deck fittings; hatches; toilets; lifejackets; engine spare parts; and even kayaks. It has a workshop, parts department and a full service department with four qualified technicians.

PW Marine carries Mercury engines and sells a variety of boats: Sea Ray; Boston Whaler; Regal; Sea Fox; Magnum; Bayliner; and Livingstone.

It also has a 24-hour marina service, with rental berths at the Waterfront and catering provided by Miles Market and Harry’s Bar and Restaurant.

“We like to think we are a one-stop shop which caters for the needs of the boating public,” said Mr Brooks.

PW Marine has 7,000 square foot of retail space, containing up to 20,000 items, including parts.

Mr Brooks said: “We like to think we give good customer service. If we haven’t got an item we will try to source it on the Internet or telephone another company that might have it.

“If we can’t get the product we will point the customer in the direction of someone else who may have it.

“But 95 per cent of the time, people coming in get what they want.

“We also have an accommodating returns policy, with few questions asked. If you keep your receipt we will give you your money back.


“We also try to keep a close control on pricing. Our main competitors are the retail stores on the east coast of the US and so we try to make it as competitive as possible for people to shop here, rather than going overseas or online.

“We also have monthly special offers, which customers can find out about by joining our e-mail list.

“We are interested in retaining customers through the life of the product, whether it’s a boat or a bilge pump.

“We offer a good range of products at a competitive price, proffered by an experienced bunch of salesmen and women. We also like to have fun here and customers stay for more than an hour at times, having a laugh with us.”

He added: “We also sponsor a lot of local organizations, from power boating associations to sea cadets, and give discounts to members of sailing associations and trade people.”

PW Marine has 11 knowledgeable members of staff and is open six days a week, from 8am to 5pm.

Jack Pitman, also known as ‘Uncle Jack’, is the most experienced, having worked at the store for 56 years. He is renowned for his bespoke splicing and rope work service.

Sharon Lindo in the parts department and Brian Willis in the warehouse have also worked at the firm for more than 30 years.

Mr Brooks served with the Royal Navy for 24 years and has worked at the store for almost six years.

He said: “We get all walks of life through these doors, and everyone who comes here is bound by the sea.

“It is a great leveller. The sea has no preference for who you are or what you’ve done.”
